Malta had the second best bathing waters in the EU last summer according to a new Bathing Water Report published by the European Commission this morning.

The report says that 97.7 per cent of Malta’s bathing waters, which includes data from 87 sites in Malta and Gozo, were of ‘excellent’ quality in 2011– the best possible quality under the EU’s bathing water directive.

This was an improvement of 2.3 per cent over 2010 when Malta’s waters were already classified among the best in Europe.

The only EU member states which managed to surpass Malta was Cyprus, which last year reported 99.1 per cent of all its beaches having excellent quality bathing water.

A Commission official told timesofmalta.com that these results showed that Malta had managed to considerably improve its bathing water quality during the past years following multi-million investments in the building of sewage treatment facilities with the help of EU funds.

Malta is the only EU member state which treats all its sewage.
